"Damn bruh, BHS-Student is tweakin'," my classmate vociferated.
"This school's Wi-Fi is so ass," hollered another one of my classmates in response. "Can somebody run a hotspot?" the BHS-Student kid cried out.
The horrendously unhurried Wi-Fi speeds at Berkeley High have been a frequent issue since my freshman year. I have witnessed countless cases of students having to deal with repeatedly refreshing pages, waiting 15 minutes into a class period before starting their work.
"So what is the issue with BHS-Student?" you wonder.
On December 12th, I sat down with an IT Administrator, who has requested to remain anonymous, and what I was told is truly shocking. I was informed that on the average day, Berkeley High School WiFi network "BHS-Student" is used by upwards of 5,000 different devices such as cell phones, Chromebooks, and various gizmos and gadgets that the student body is using. This is truly astonishing because BHS-Student is only capable of handling "a lot less than 5,000 devices at ideal speeds", I was told by this administrator. "I don't want the actual number to be published" he later stated. I could not stand for this, so I ran tests showing that BHS-Student runs just below 50% of its possible speeds. After testing, I can safely say that BHS-Student is only built to handle somewhere between 2,500 and 3,500 devices. This does not meet the needs of the student body. So what is the solution to Berkeley High's infuriating Wi-Fi? I think it's quite clear, just upgrade the Wi-Fi! Please, Juan! I beg of you! Funding a more adequate Wi-Fi network would be beneficial to BHS students' educational experiences.
